C10 - Château near Cognac

Overview

This very rare manorhouse (probably one the most beautiful and prestigious in the region) dates from the 16th and 18th centuries. It was built on a small headland during the wars of religion between Protestants and Catholics. This explains its frontage with a notched gate and its nine machicoulis dating back to 1562. It is listed in the Inventory of Historic Buildings.

At the top of the entrance door, one can read the inscription "DIEU SOICT LA GARDE DE L’ENTREE ET DE LA SORTIE". "GOD PROTECT THE ENTRY AND THE EXIT".


It is a very beautiful and large manor, particularly pleasant to live in, with terraces on each frontage: the south-facing one looks onto a closed court-yard, while the north-facing one opens onto a large, enclosed garden. The manor-house has been recently renovated and redecorated for maximum comfort sleeping up to 15 comfortably 


Being an agricultural property, vineyards surround it.

Accommodation

Built length-ways, the manor was conceived in 4 separate areas, allowing for the greatest privacy and independence of its inhabitants. The accommodation which sleeps up to 15 comfortably is laid out over two floors. Cots are also available 

There are 11 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms in total and several living rooms two main salons, two dining rooms, a TV room and a kitchen 

Both ground and first floors have two wings the west and east wings

In the west wing There are two large living rooms with double aspect windows  looking out over the gardens and the front courtyard each 40m2 in area as well as a dining room likewise 40m2 with double aspect views,

A corridor links a 2nd dining room often used for breakfasts and small family groups a TV room with music system and dvds and a kitchen with a table and chairs seating ten easily. 

There is a bedroom suite comprising one double bedroom with an ensuite bathroom and a single bedroom on the ground floor

The east wing  houses  a double bedroom with an ensuite bathroom and a single bedroom and a games room on the ground floor

On the first floor

There are various bedrooms and bathrooms suitable for children and au pairs

in the west wing a room for laundry and three bedrooms and one bathroom

The gardens which are situated to the north of the manor house are very beautifully designed and give wondrous views of working vineyards as well as a 12the century private chapelle rin the distance recently restored by the family 

There is a recently built swimming pool in the grounds tastefully situated so as to be discrete 8x4m with glorious views over the surrounding countryside and gardens

There is a also an ancient dovecote unique in its size symbol of the power of the family the the 16th century awaiting restoration in 2025 -2026. You can see it as you drive in through the main gate

The manorhouse lies 7 kms from Cognac, the cradle of King François 1° (16th century), in the heart of renowned vineyards (www.tourism-cognac.com).

1 hour from the Atlantic ocean and the city of Royan.

30 minutes from the historical centre of Saintes.

45 minutes from the Gironde river and its charming river ports.

1 hour and fifteen minutes from Bordeaux.

1 hour and fifteen minutes from Green Venice (www.la-venise-verte.com) a very beautiful area of canals

- a renowned 18 hole golf course (1.5kms away) designed by Garaialde and tennis courts

- boating and canoeing on the Charente river 2 kms away ,

- visits to the cellars of such famous names as Hennessy, Martell , Remy Martin and Courvoisier

The manorhouse  has been offered for rental for the first time for the summer season of July and August 2024 primarily to pay for the renovation of the 16th century dovecote which is visible on entry to the property 

The price includes the use of a cleaning lady three days a week and a gardener who also looks after the swimming pool
